Overview
The archaeological site of Amnissos, located east of Heraklion, is an important part of the history of Crete. It was an important port during the Minoan period and later a thriving city. One of the most impressive finds in Amnissos is the so-called "Villa of the Lilies". It is a multi-storey Minoan mansion, built around 1500 BC, which collapsed in an earthquake. Its name comes from the frescoes depicting lilies. At the western foot of the hill of Amnisos is the sanctuary of Zeus Tenata. This sanctuary was dedicated to Zeus and remained in use for many centuries, from the Hellenistic to the Roman period. Through the excavations, many objects of daily use have been found, such as vases, tools and jewellery, which give a vivid picture of Minoan life.
