Cave of Milatos
Overview
The Cave of Milatos, located in the village of the same name in the prefecture of Lassithi in Crete. Although it is a natural cave, its history is intertwined with one of the most tragic pages of the Cretan Revolution of 1821.During the revolution, the local inhabitants, faced with Ottoman oppression, fled to the cave to save themselves. However, the Turks spotted them and besieged them. After a siege lasting several days, the trapped people, realizing that there was no hope of escape, preferred heroic death to captivity.Today, the cave is a monument dedicated to those who sacrificed themselves there. It is a place that both moves and respects history.
