Chelidonia Gorge
Overview
Chelidonia Gorge is a hidden natural treasure near Plakias, on the southern coast of Crete. Less known than other gorges on the island, it offers a peaceful hiking experience through untouched landscapes. The gorge begins near the village of Selia and winds its way down towards the Libyan Sea, offering breathtaking views along the way. \n\rThe trail is surrounded by wild vegetation, steep cliffs, and occasional streams, especially in spring. It's not a heavily trafficked path, making it ideal for solitude and nature observation. Hikers may encounter local wildlife, including birds, goats, and a variety of native plants. The route is moderate in difficulty, requiring good shoes and a sense of adventure. At certain points, the gorge narrows dramatically between rock walls. \n\rThe walk usually takes 2–3 hours, depending on pace and weather. The reward is a sense of peace and connection with Crete’s wild beauty. It’s a fantastic alternative for those seeking a less commercial, more authentic Cretan nature experience.
