Overview
Chrysoskalitissa Monastery is a beautiful Orthodox monastery located on a rocky hill overlooking the Libyan Sea.It is situated near the famous Elafonissi Beach, in the southwestern part of Crete.\n\rThe monastery's name means "Golden Step," referring to a local legend about a hidden golden stair.According to tradition, only the truly faithful can see this golden step among the 98 that lead to the entrance.Built during the Venetian period, the monastery has strong historical and religious significance.Its whitewashed walls and traditional architecture create a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.\n\rFrom the top, visitors enjoy panoramic views of the sea and surrounding landscape.It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and celebrates on the 15th of August.Inside, there is a small museum with religious relics and icons.The monastery served as a refuge during times of war and hardship.
