Overview
Fortress Kales is one of the most important historical monuments of Ierapetra and one of the most impressive castles of Crete. It is located in the harbour of the town and offers a unique view of the sea and the town.The fortress was built by the Venetians in the 13th century to protect the town and its port from pirates and enemies. It suffered several disasters from earthquakes and wars, but was renovated and reinforced many times. Today it is an archaeological site open to visitors.
