It is one of the most famous and historical castles of Crete, which combines impressive architecture with a mysterious legend. It was built by the Venetians in the 14th century and was originally called Agios Nikitas. The name Frangokastello was later given to it by the locals, who called all foreign Catholics Franks. It was an important strategic point for the Venetians, as it controlled a large area of land and protected the area from pirate raids. After the fall of Venice, the castle passed into the hands of the Ottomans and later the Venetians and the Ottomans alternately. The most famous legend associated with Fragokastello is that of the Drosoulites. According to legend, every year at the beginning of May, the shadows of dead Sfakian soldiers who were killed in battle near the castle in the 19th century appear. These shadows, the so-called Drosoulites, seem to be fighting in the light of the sunrise. The legend has become known all over the world and attracts many visitors who want to see this phenomenon with their own eyes.
