Overview

The Koules of Spaniakos is an Ottoman-era fortress located on the southern slopes of the White Mountains, near the village of Spaniakos in the Chania region of Crete. Constructed around 1867, it was part of a network of small forts—known as koules—built by the Ottomans following the Cretan Revolution of 1866–1869 to suppress local uprisings and control strategic locations across the island.\n\rThe fortress features a rectangular layout measuring approximately 20 by 13 meters, with a cylindrical tower at its northeastern corner. Its elevated position at around 560 meters above sea level provided a commanding view of the surrounding valleys, passages, and peaks, as well as the southern coastline.\n\rThe koules of Spaniakos played a significant role in the Ottoman efforts to monitor and control the region, serving as a lookout point and a symbol of authority during a period of unrest. Today, the fortress stands as a historical monument, offering visitors insight into the island's complex past and the strategic military architecture of the 19th century.
