Mother Olive Tree
Overview
Located near the village of Kamilari in southern Crete, the Mana Elia (meaning “Mother Olive Tree”) is one of the island’s oldest and most awe-inspiring olive trees. Estimated to be around 2,800 years old, this ancient tree dates back to the Roman era, possibly even earlier. Its trunk circumference reaches nearly 9.5 meters, making it a living natural monument. \n\rSurrounding the tree are 12 large stones, 8 of which are carved with ancient Minoan symbols like the double axe (labrys) — a powerful nod to the Minoan civilization and the area's long history. These stones were placed by the Cultural Association of Kamilari to honor and protect the site.
