Heraklion City, Heraklion, Crete
Overview
Phaistos was one of the three palatial complexes where Minoan power was concentrated. Phaistos is located in the centre of Crete and was located in the 19th century by Thomas Abel Brimage Spratt, who followed the instructions of the ancient geographer Strabo. In 1908, the Phaistos Disc was discovered in the basement of the ancient site. It is on display at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum and is a clay disc, dated between 1950 BC and 1400 BC and imprinted with a unique and as yet undeciphered writing. Visitors can explore the ruins of the palace, admire its elaborate architecture and imagine the life that developed here thousands of years ago.
