Overview

The Sabbionara Bastion, also known as the Sand Gate, is a significant part of Chania's Venetian fortifications. Constructed in 1536 by the Venetians to protect the city from Ottoman invasions, its name "Sabbionara" derives from the Italian phrase "Porta Sabbionara," meaning "Gate of Sand," as it led directly to a small beach outside the city walls.
