Spinalonga is a small island at the entrance of the Elounda lagoon in northeastern Crete, in Lasithi. It has a rich and turbulent history, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Crete. From 1903 to 1957, Spinalonga operated as a leprosarium, where leprosy patients lived and were treated. This period is the most famous and moving in the history of the island.After the closure of the leprosarium, the island was abandoned for several years. Today, Spinalonga is a popular tourist attraction, attracting thousands of visitors every year.
