Overview

One of the most important caves in Crete and a place of great historical and mythological importance. It is located on the north side of Mount Dikti, above the village of Psychro in the municipality of Lassithi Plateau, at an altitude of 1020 metres.According to Greek mythology, Rhea hid in the Diktaion Andro to give birth to Zeus, the father of the gods, away from the gaze of his father Cronus who was devouring his children. Thus, the cave is considered the birthplace of Zeus and one of the holiest sites of ancient Greek religion.Inside the cave, important archaeological finds have been found, such as pottery, tools and animal bones, which testify to the occupation of the area since prehistoric times.
