Overview

Fortezza is one of the most impressive monuments of Crete and one of the most important attractions of Rethymno. This imposing Venetian fortress dominates the city and offers a unique view of the Aegean Sea.The construction of the Fortezza began in 1573 by the Venetians, who wanted to protect the city from Ottoman raids. The fortress was captured by the Ottomans in 1646 and remained in their hands until the liberation of Crete. The Fortezza is an excellent example of Venetian military architecture. Its walls are built of stone and are up to 5 meters thick. Inside the fort there are various buildings such as barracks, storehouses, churches and water tanks.
