Overview
Toplou Monastery or Akrotiri Monastery, as it is called because of its location at the eastern end of Crete, is one of the most important and historic monasteries on the island. It is located at the base of Cape Sidero, 10 kilometres east of Sitia and 6 kilometres north of Palaikastro.The foundation of the monastery probably dates back to the late 14th century. It has experienced many disasters from pirate raids and wars, but has managed to survive and be reborn. The monastery has played an important role in the history of Crete, as it has been a centre of spirituality, culture and resistance.
